EWAN WILL BE TAKING PART IN THE FOLLOWING AUTHORS DEBATE: Thursday 4th JUNE.
Orange Night asks ‘is the love story dead?’
Romantics and cynics will face off at Perth’s annual celebration of women writers and readers on Thursday 4th June 2009 at the AK Bell Library, PERTH.
Orange Night this year will take a break from its usual format. Instead of featuring the six shortlisted novels for the women-only Orange Prize, the event will widen its gaze to take in the whole of contemporary fiction. A panel of top Scottish writers and literary experts, male and female, will debate the question, Is the love story dead?
The five guest speakers will explore whether romance is still relevant in these cynical times - does anyone believe in romantic destiny and star-crossed lovers? Does the love story have something serious to say about contemporary life — or is it just a guilty pleasure, a entertaining beach-read? Just what are the ingredients of the classic love story?
The panel includes three writers: Ewan Morrison, whose debut, Swung, was shortlisted for the Le Prince Maurice Award for the most outstanding literary love story; Carmen Reid, author of six best-selling ‘chick-lit’ novels; and novelist-cum-publisher Sharon Blackie, of Two Ravens Press. Dorothy McMillan, a senior lecturer at Glasgow University and editor of a recent edition of Jane Austen’s Emma, will offer some perspective on classic love stories of the past; and Stuart Kelly, of Scotland on Sunday, will add a literary editor’s view. The audience will have the chance to have their say too. The debate will be chaired by writer-in-residence Ajay Close.
Orange Night with a Twist begins at 7.30pm on Thursday 4th June in the Soutar Theatre at the AK Bell Library. Tickets are £7 including refreshments and are available from the AK Bell Library in person or by calling 01738 477019.
