I just read your essay on swinging ((c) The Independent March 31,2007), and found it to be a brilliantly truthful, honest look at the “fad” of swinging. I am won over by your honesty and skill with words, and am definitely going to read your book.

Hello Mr Morrison
I remember seeing you when you worked at STV. You were a polymath influence on me, I don’t know if you realise that. You said I could make beautiful things out of any old tat. I always thought you looked like a young Steven Spielberg. You walked alone sunshine. We talked about whether the Prodigy’s “Smack My Bitch Up” was offensive to women. I was worried it was. You, less so. I read your Independant article last week, thought it was rather good you clever bugger. I too took my career to America and it went tits up, but that’s half the fun I guess! Who am I?

Swinging, ah yes, only the Brits or the rather the Scots to be exact in this case could make such a song and dance about it. I read the guide to swinging and what a rigmarole. False names, secret get out words, picture validation, adverts on websites…is this really what you have to go through in the UK? In Germany swinging is totally well organised, about as open as you can make it with such an activity and a millions times more enjoyable judging by Ewan’s accounts. One swingers site offers each couple their own profile page - who they are and what they like and which swinger clubs they like going to - in addition you get your own homepage and a whole range of activities from group beach holidays and ski holidays (here they book an entire hotel for the party which usually numbers around 100 couples) to pool night parties where an entire public swimming pool complex is booked for anything up to 250 couples. All this let alone packed weekend programmes with couples running private parties and hooking up to go clubing at one of the estimated 100 swimger clubs in Germany ranging from the somewhat tatty to extremely grand country houses. the better clubs offer five star restaurant service. Entrance prices at the top end are about fifty pounds a couple, all food and drink free, as well as the sex of course…dear old Britain, what is your problem with sex?

Just read Swung and really loved it. The first few pages I was skeptical, but then I got into it and the character development drew me in. At first it seemed she was the artistic one, but towards the end I felt that David was the artist in denial. I did think that Alice was going to commit suicide at the end, and the ending was a surprise, although perfectly satisfying. (Although as a reader you suspect that any happiness might be short lived.) Was Alice really a good painter or was she misunderstood?
Thanks for a great read and all best with future projects.

Long story short. I also write. For the past two years I’ve been working on a novel about swinging, set in Glasgow’s West End. Then a few months ago I read about you, this Ewan guy, who has written a book about swinging in the west end of Glasgow. I was cross. (At myself mostly for not getting mine written sooner) And so I bought “Swung” to read the competition.
All I can say is wow!
From one who has been there, what a fantastic book. I was expecting the usual “Marie Claire” type expose.
What I got was a compassionate honest book about the struggles of living in a (mostly) monogamous world. The best book I’ve read all year.
I am now working through your short story collection. And wondering where you have been hiding to see my world so clearly.
PS- I have never been moved to write fan mail to an author before.
So there.

Hello!
I deduced that you must have stumbled across my blog while looking for, um, inspiration for your piece on seasonal affective disorder and therefore you’re the one responsible for getting it into The Scotsman at the weekend. If I deduced rightly* then thank you!
I’ve been meaning to write about this laddie http://thelonger.com/about/ for a while (but a kitten-related incident means my laptop now has no sound so youtube hasn’t been my priority.) His name is Mike and he likes to dance. I find it fucking joyous. I hope you might, too.
* If I deduced wrongly then God damn I’ll shut the detective agency!

I just read your diary printed in today’s Culture supplement in the Sunday Times - fantastic - how I love the sentence, ” I sensed this could be amazing, if I could just relax”. It’s such a relief when writers make a comedy out of anxiety! Congratulations on Swung, will pick it up next time I’m in the book shop.
